Heart Disease Focus DictionaryA-E | F-J | K-O | P-S | T-ZLong QT Syndrome (LQTS): A disorder of the heart's electrical system. The condition leaves one vulnerable to fast, chaotic heartbeats.
mitral regurgitation: A backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium of the heart due to mitral insufficiency from incomplete closure of the mitral valve.
mitral valve prolapse: In patients with mitral valve prolapse, the mitral apparatus (valve leaflets and chordae) becomes affected by a process called myxomatous degeneration. When the ventricles contract, the redundant leaflets prolapse (flop backwards) into the left atrium, sometimes allowing leakage of blood through the valve opening (mitral regurgitation). myocardial infarction: A heart attack. The term "myocardial infarction" (MI) focuses on the myocardium (the heart muscle) and the changes that occur in it due to the sudden deprivation of circulating blood. nitroglycerine: Nitroglycerin corrects the imbalance between the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart and the work that the heart must do by dilating the arteries and veins in the body.
